John 3:16-21

God So Loved the World

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God

John 18:1-12

The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

18 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he entered, and his disciples. 2 And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples. 3 Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. 4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? 5 They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. 6 As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. 7 Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. 8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: 9 That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. 10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. 11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?

Jesus Brought before the High Priest

12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound him,

Leader: Dear Lord, who loves us more than life itself, how should we love Thee?

Mark 15:16-20

16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; [1] and they call together the whole band. 17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, 18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! 19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

RESPONDING TO GOD’S LOVE: A RESPONSIVE READING FOR HOLY WEEK

Leader: Dear Lord, who loves us more than life itself, how should we love Thee?

Congregation: Lord, teach us how to love thee and one another.

Leader: Dear “Word” of God who left the glories of heaven to become human flesh and to bring sinful humanity back to the source of our being, how should we love Thee?

Congregation: Lord, teach us how to love thee and one another.

Leader: Dear Lord, who suffered betrayal, denial, desertion, condescension, ridicule, torture and finally, a gruesome death by crucifixion – all because of your love for us, how should we love Thee?

Congregation: Lord, teach us how to love thee and one another.

Leader: Dear Lord, teach us that genuine love comes through giving of ourselves to each other, for “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son… and Christ Jesus in his love gave his life for our sins.

Congregation: Lord, teach us how to love thee and one another.

Leader: Dear Lord, teach us that to truly love we cannot sit passively and do nothing. Teach us that love and faith require us to be involved in the sometime difficult work of following Jesus’ example of how to live.

Congregation: Lord, teach us how to love thee and one another.

All: Dear Lord, teach us that love requires us to nurture and strengthen our faith. Teach us in our love for you to do as Jesus urged us to do in Matthew’s gospel (11:29), “Take my yoke upon You and from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (NKJV) Lord, may we show our love by taking your yoke and loving as you loved!
